### Summary
Incumbent serves as a rotating Medical Technologist in the Medical Laboratory of the Manchester VA Medical Center, and may be assigned to
any department or shift covered by Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. Will rotate through departments as staffing needs dictate, and are required on a rotating basis to provide phlebotomy services for morning draws, weekend rotation, and holiday coverage.

### Responsibilities
* Performs phlebotomy on patients as needed
* Performs testing for lab sections to which he/she may be assigned
* Performs emergency testing in all departments as required for weekend and off-shift emergency coverage
* Troubleshoots instrument or procedure problems as necessary
* Performs, records, and acts on quality control and instrument function checks; documents actions when results are unacceptable
* Evaluates suitability of specimens for analysis, prepares for analysis, requests new specimens if necessary
* Recognizes abnormal results that require immediate attention by the physician and reports them immediately
* Is responsible for generating lab results from the work area into the lab computer system, edits and verifies results recorded
**Work Schedule:** 7am - 3:30pm, 7:30am - 4:00pm, 8am - 4:30pm, and/or tours necessary to cover weekends and holidays on scheduled rotation.

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
* United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
* A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (e.g., laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc.) OR
* A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics
* Completion of a medical technology clinical practice program OR
two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience (e.g., blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical microscopy, etc.) within the last ten years as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) OR
* five years of clinical laboratory experience within the last ten years performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory
* Certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT
**Grade Requirements:**
GS-7: None beyond the basic requirements.
GS-9: One year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7), which is directly related to the position to be filled OR
A master's degree or 2 academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education in medical technology.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-7 to GS-9.
**Physical Requirements:**The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as prolonged standing, bending over microscopes,reaching for supplies or materials, and lifting moderately heavy items such as centrifuges and record boxes (or occasionally lifting heavier items such as reagent packs). The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as dexterity (to perform intricate collection or analysis procedures) and color vision.
